The performance

Choreography: Fast Forward

3th and 4th of May 2013

C:FF was part of AI'13, Assemblee Internationale 2013, an international festival for the best ballet students of balletschools from all over the globe, held in Toronto, Canada, hosted by Canada's National Ballet School. In this two weeks event the students were challanged with several workshops, training sessions, choreographing and performances.

As grande finale several final pieces were performed during 'Choreography: Fast Forward'. The twelfth and last piece of C:FF was STREAM!, a project which has been talked about for over two years and took a whole year of planning and preparation.

'Dasha? Are you there?'

After the intermission Kaitlin Sim (Canada's National Ballet School) entered the stage. Responding to her question Dasha Schwartz (Nationale Balletacademie (Netherlands)) appeared, projected on the backdrop, while a surge of astonishment went through the audience.

Kaitlin and Dasha knew eachother from the time Dasha was studying at NBS. They had a quick conversation, for Kaitlin in Toronto it was still afternoon, for Dasha in Amsterdam it was allready getting late in the evening.

Everybody was ready so they agreed on dancing together.

Two Screens

On the stage in Toronto two big vertical projection screens were set up for the 'virtual dancers', who were being filmed in Amsterdam, to be projected on.

When Kaitlin and Dasha started dancing and improvising together Dasha went from the backdrop to the Stage Right screen.

Introducing the other dancers

Both in Toronto as in Amsterdam more dancers were present, in Toronto a total of 30, in Amsterdam 11. So they were introduced on both screens and also started dancing together.

Three Men

Then both Kaitlin and Dasha started doing an improv with three men. At one point Kaitlin did this behind the projection screen where Dasha was projected on. There it was really hard to distinguish what dancer was real and what dancer was virtual, since you could see through the projecton screen.

They both end up with one guy in a duet, here you see them dancing in mirror image.

Ensemble

In the climax all 41 dancers were on (virtual) stage. Sometimes they danced the same, sometimes not, sometimes all dancers faced the same direction, sometimes the local dancers faced one direction, while the virtual dancers faced a different direction.

The Bows

In the end you need to bow, in this case virtually as well. Here you see a vitual choreographer, a virtual technical crew and virtual dancers.
